There's never been a better time to get into retro gaming. Whether you want authenticity or convenience, there are options for every budget and preference.
Option 1: The Authentic Route
Original hardware on a CRT TV. This is the purist's choice. Hunt for a quality CRT (Sony Trinitrons are legendary), grab original consoles, and experience games exactly as intended. Downsides: CRTs are heavy, original hardware can fail, and good games are expensive.
Option 2: The Modern Classic
Mini consoles like the SNES Classic and NES Classic offer plug-and-play convenience with HDMI output. Great for casual nostalgia, though the game selection is limited.
Option 3: The Enthusiast Setup
